Yemen Media Watch Urges Urgent Aid for 117 Displaced Journalists

The Yemeni Media Freedoms Observatory (Mersadak), affiliated with the Economic Media and Studies Center, has issued an urgent appeal to the international community, humanitarian organizations, and donors for immediate humanitarian and professional support for approximately 117 journalists and media professionals displaced from Al-Mokha and surrounding areas.

In a briefing detailing the humanitarian and living conditions of the displaced journalists, the observatory stated that this wave of displacement occurred in September, prompted by rapid military developments and the Houthi militia's entry into the region. The report indicated that the displaced count includes 15 journalists, photographers, and collaborators working independently or for various media institutions.

Regarding the violations and circumstances leading to displacement, the observatory confirmed that several journalists were compelled to evacuate their homes urgently due to fears of abduction. Authorities also received reports of journalists' homes being raided and their contents looted, resulting in the loss of their residences, property, and sole sources of income.

In conclusion, the Media Freedoms Observatory called upon all humanitarian organizations and donors to provide an urgent support package. This package should include temporary financial assistance, secure housing for the displaced, psychological and professional support, and the provision of necessary equipment to enable journalists and media workers to resume their work and fulfill their mission in safe and stable conditions.
