US officials reportedly engaged in a clandestine meeting with representatives of the Houthi militia in Muscat, Oman, earlier this week. The discussions occurred amid escalating military actions in Yemen, including the militia's capture of strategic locations along the Red Sea coast and the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

According to Reuters, which cited five sources familiar with the matter, the unannounced meeting took place at the US Embassy in Muscat. Other sources indicated that the Omani government, which has played a mediating role in the Yemeni conflict, facilitated the gathering. Washington has not officially disclosed details of the meeting or its participants.

This encounter follows a statement made two days prior by US Vice President JD Vance, who confirmed that Washington was conducting direct discussions with the Houthi militia regarding recent developments in the Red Sea. Vance emphasized that the US administration was closely monitoring the situation and maintaining communication with Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and other nations affected by the escalation.

The Houthi militia has recently expanded its territorial control over key areas on Yemen's western coast, advancing towards positions and islands situated near the Bab al-Mandab Strait. This expansion has raised international concerns about maritime security and the safety of international trade routes through the Red Sea.

The Reuters report indicated that the US-Houthi meeting took place after the militia secured significant portions of Yemen's Red Sea coastline, including areas and sites close to the port of Mocha and Perim Island, which is strategically located within the Bab al-Mandab Strait.

The revelation of these talks coincides with heightened diplomatic and military activities in the region, driven by concerns over a potential widening of the conflict in Yemen and its implications for international navigation and energy markets. The strategic importance of the Bab al-Mandab Strait as a major global maritime trade artery underscores these concerns.
