Saudi Royal Air Defense forces successfully intercepted and destroyed a hostile drone launched by the Houthi militia that was attempting to target the holy city of Mecca.

The official spokesperson for the Coalition to Support Legitimacy in Yemen, Major General Turki Al-Malki, stated that the interception occurred at 6:50 PM on September 15, 2026. Saudi defenses successfully destroyed the drone south of the holy capital before it could penetrate protected airspace.

Major General Al-Malki characterized this incident as a blatant act of aggression and terrorism, noting it aligns with the Houthi militia's continuous violations. This marks the second attempt by the group to target Mecca, following a previous ballistic missile launch in July 2017. He emphasized that targeting the birthplace of prophecy and a sanctuary for Muslims is a reprehensible act that provokes the sentiments of the entire Islamic nation.

The official spokesperson underscored that the security of the Two Holy Mosques and the safety of pilgrims are non-negotiable priorities. He affirmed that the joint forces command of the coalition will continue to implement all decisive and firm measures to counter the Houthi militia's aggressive actions and ensure the protection of the Kingdom's security, its citizens, and residents.
