The UN Security Council has issued a stern warning regarding the escalating risks to regional and global peace, citing the continued links between the Houthi militia and Iran's regional axis. This comes amid critical developments in the Yemeni file, influenced by broader regional implications of the ongoing Middle East conflict.

During a session chaired by Bahrain, the Council highlighted that the actions of the Iran-aligned Houthi militia in Yemen, coupled with their declarations of wider involvement in regional conflicts, could undermine fragile peace efforts and jeopardize maritime navigation, particularly in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Red Sea.

Bahrain's Permanent Representative to the UN emphasized the Council's grave concern over factors that could re-complicate the Yemeni crisis and expand the scope of regional conflict. He called for enhanced international cooperation to prevent any further escalation that might impact international shipping lanes and global trade.

The Council affirmed that any strategic ties between the Houthi militia and the Iranian axis, amidst rising regional tensions, could precipitate a broader escalation of armed conflict and further complicate efforts to achieve a political resolution in Yemen.

In relation to maritime security, participating diplomats noted that recent maneuvers and militant statements from Houthi leadership regarding their readiness to act in regional waters if the war against Iran extends to strategic areas have fueled concerns about threats to freedom of navigation in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

Strategic international waterways, including the Bab el-Mandeb, Strait of Hormuz, and the Red Sea, are vital routes for global trade and energy transport. These areas have experienced shifts in shipping routes and a decline in certain maritime flows in recent months due to escalating regional tensions.

Concluding the session, the Council urged restraint and the imperative to preserve freedom of navigation and international trade routes, ensuring that the situation in Yemen does not become a factor exacerbating regional risks. The Council also stressed the importance of intensifying support for UN efforts aimed at resuming the peace process in Yemen, reviving the political process, and preventing any actions that could plunge Yemen back into conflict and destruction.
