Houthi Captive Reveals Deception: Youth Lured to Combat via 'Recreational' Camps

A Houthi militant captured by the Giants Brigades has detailed how he and other youths were deceived into fighting on the front lines after being lured to the coastal city of Al-Mukha under the guise of recreational activities.

The 18-year-old captive stated in confessions broadcast by the Giants Brigades that his involvement began with an invitation from Houthi elements to attend a summer center. After spending approximately a month there, he and others were informed they would embark on a trip to Al-Mukha for a seaside excursion.

Upon arrival in the city and after being allowed to swim, the group was unexpectedly handed weapons and subsequently transported to the Kakhub front. There, they were coerced into engaging in armed conflict.

The captive's testimony sheds light on a recruitment strategy that commences with targeting young individuals through summer centers before deploying them to battlefronts, raising concerns about the utilization of activities aimed at younger demographics for military mobilization purposes.

The captive urged other young men to reject Houthi recruitment drives and avoid the fate he and others experienced through similar deceptive tactics.

Yemeni human rights sources have called upon United Nations and human rights organizations to intervene to protect Yemen's children from the Houthi militia's abuses, and to pressure for the closure of their summer centers, which reports and victim testimonies indicate have been repurposed into recruitment and entrapment camps for children.
