The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET) anticipates the ongoing food security crisis in Yemen, particularly in Houthi-controlled areas, will continue until the end of the third quarter of the current year, driven by the protracted conflict and its escalating economic and humanitarian consequences.

In its latest report on Yemen's food security outlook, FEWS NET indicated that emergency conditions, classified as Phase 4 of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC), are projected to persist through September in the Houthi-held governorates of Hodeidah, Hajjah, and Taiz. Meanwhile, crisis conditions (Phase 3) are expected to prevail across most other Houthi-controlled regions.

Within areas under the Yemeni government's control, the report highlighted the continuation of crisis conditions (Phase 3) until the end of September. Pockets of emergency conditions (Phase 4) are also foreseen, especially among households facing severe limitations in food and income sources.

The report attributed the persistent crisis to a deteriorating business environment, the imposition of restrictions on investors and commercial activities, and limited livelihood opportunities in Houthi-controlled territories. Furthermore, ongoing economic disruptions and their repercussions in government-controlled areas contribute significantly to the severity of the situation.

These combined factors, the report explained, are leading to a decline in household purchasing power, exacerbating the difficulty of securing food. This is likely to widen food consumption gaps and compel more families to adopt unsustainable coping strategies to mitigate the crisis's impact until the end of September.
