Aden Authorities Shut Down Shamlan Water Warehouses Amid Price Gouging Concerns

Local authorities in Aden's Dar Saad district have closed four key warehouses belonging to the Shamlan water producer, citing violations related to price manipulation and illegal distribution practices. The action was taken on Sunday following a field campaign to enhance market oversight.

The Office of Industry and Trade stated that the closure was a result of the producer's failure to comply with previous directives aimed at regulating pricing and distribution, despite multiple meetings held with water factories to discuss market control mechanisms.

Officials noted that the absence of an official representative for the producer in Aden, coupled with the evasion of key distributors from attending meetings and conducting sales during late hours, had hindered oversight efforts and contributed to ongoing price discrepancies.

Inspection teams, in coordination with the Ministry's office in Aden, confirmed that the warehouses were shut down after evidence emerged of water carton prices being increased from 4,200 to 6,200 Yemeni riyals. The use of foreign currency in transactions was also cited as a violation of applicable laws.

This development occurs amidst escalating public demands for broader oversight campaigns targeting traders of essential food items and goods. Citizens have expressed widespread complaints about rising prices and market manipulation, despite a relative improvement in the local currency's value mid-last year and a slight recovery last month.

Local sources reported that prices continue to rise compared to the period of initial currency recovery in late 2025, exacerbating the hardship faced by residents. These sources also highlighted a pervasive silence from the Ministry of Industry and Trade and relevant government bodies regarding the persistent price hikes across all goods, with varying degrees of increase.
