A young man reportedly ended his life by hanging inside the courtyard of a mosque in Ibb Governorate, central Yemen, a tragic incident local sources attribute to prolonged suffering under severe living conditions and resulting psychological deterioration. Local sources confirmed that the deceased, identified as Akram Yousef Saleh Al-Hajri, was discovered during the past few hours suspended in the square of a mosque in the Al-Jaba'ib village, located in the Ba'dan district, east of Ibb Governorate. The sources indicated that the young man had been grappling with intense economic pressures stemming from the deterioration of living standards and the scarcity of employment opportunities, factors which precipitated a severe psychological state culminating in this tragic act. Vast regions of Yemen are currently enduring a suffocating economic crisis that has persisted since the conflict began following the Houthi militia's insurrection in September 2014. During this period, the prices of essential foodstuffs and basic necessities have reportedly escalated more than tenfold compared to pre-war levels. Furthermore, hundreds of thousands of civil servants in areas controlled by the coup-affiliated militia have faced years without receiving their salaries. The internationally recognized Yemeni government and various observers accuse the militia of appropriating revenues from state institutions and multiple income streams, including the Hodeidah ports and telecommunications company taxes, in addition to imposing new levies and fees on goods and commodities. Consequently, the humanitarian and living conditions across the country have worsened significantly in recent years, marked by escalating rates of poverty and unemployment and a marked decline in citizens' purchasing power. |
