The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has reported a significant surge in displacement within Yemen, with over 233,077 individuals displaced since the latest escalation of conflict began in June. This includes more than 121,000 people in the Taiz governorate, amidst dire United Nations warnings about the deteriorating humanitarian situation and increased risks to civilians, particularly women, children, and vulnerable groups.

Zoe Brennan, spokesperson for the IOM, stated during a press conference in Geneva that this wave of displacement has forced tens of thousands of families to flee their homes due to ongoing confrontations. She expressed grave concerns regarding the protection of the displaced and the provision of their basic needs.

United Nations humanitarian agencies have called for an immediate de-escalation of hostilities and the establishment of sustained, unimpeded access for humanitarian aid to all those in need across Yemen. Particular emphasis has been placed on the Taiz governorate, which is experiencing a severely degraded situation due to persistent fighting and access restrictions.

Tareq Yassarevich, spokesperson for the World Health Organization (WHO), highlighted the critical health crisis in Taiz, noting the city's increasing isolation. Hospitals are facing acute shortages of medical supplies and fuel as fighting encroaches on urban areas.

Yassarevich detailed that 12 hospitals in Taiz city have fuel reserves sufficient for only four days, alongside severe deficits in oxygen and medicines. Surgical supplies have reached critically low levels, jeopardizing the capacity of health facilities to provide essential services to patients and the wounded.

He underscored the urgent need for power and oxygen, especially for patients undergoing dialysis and those in intensive care. Concurrently, there are growing fears of cholera outbreaks due to the breakdown of health services and difficulties in delivering necessary supplies.

The UN official stressed the imperative of ensuring safe and sustained humanitarian access to Taiz and other regions of Yemen to meet the needs of the displaced population and support healthcare facilities under immense pressure from the ongoing conflict.
