Yemen: Over 169,000 Displaced by West Coast and Taiz Escalation

More than 169,000 individuals have been forcibly displaced across Yemen due to escalating military operations and security threats, primarily in the western coastal areas and Taiz governorate. The latest figures, updated as of September 21, indicate 25,116 families have sought refuge in ten different governorates.

Taiz governorate has received the largest number of displaced families, with 12,610 households, comprising approximately 88,324 individuals, settling across 15 districts. Lahj governorate ranks second, hosting 5,625 families, followed by the interim capital, Aden, which has accommodated 3,114 families. Field monitoring teams are encountering significant challenges in comprehensively documenting the total number of displaced persons.

The Executive Unit for the Management of Camps for the Displaced also reported that 1,562 families have been displaced to Abyan and 1,471 families to Hodeidah. Secondary displacement movements towards Aden have also been recorded. The remaining displaced families are distributed across the governorates of Marib, Hadhramaut, Al Mahra, Al Dhale'e, and Shabwah, with varying numbers.

The Executive Unit highlighted that the vast majority of these families were compelled to flee suddenly, without adequate access to essential needs such as food, shelter, and healthcare. The unit issued a stark warning regarding a widening humanitarian aid gap in the areas receiving the displaced populations.

In response to the critical situation, an urgent appeal has been directed to United Nations agencies and donor organizations, calling for an immediate emergency response to provide essential provisions for the displaced individuals.
