Yemen: 'Masam' Project Removes Over 7,400 Landmines and Explosives in Two Weeks

Yemen's 'Masam' landmine clearance project has successfully removed 7,444 landmines, unexploded ordnance, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) between August 1 and August 14, as part of ongoing efforts to clear contaminated areas.

According to a statement released by the project's operations room, the total number of items cleared includes 7,226 unexploded ordnance items, 137 anti-tank mines, 35 anti-personnel mines, and 46 IEDs. During the same period, 'Masam' teams also cleared 646,550 square meters of land to secure affected areas and facilitate the safe return of residents for agricultural and livelihood activities.

In the second week of August specifically, 'Masam' teams removed 2,157 landmines, unexploded ordnance, and IEDs. This figure comprised 2,075 unexploded ordnance items, 68 anti-tank mines, 11 anti-personnel mines, and three IEDs. The teams also cleared 344,654 square meters of land in areas impacted by mines and war remnants during that week.

In the Midi district of Hajjah Governorate, the 'Masam' operations room reported that teams have cleared a total of 12,766 landmines, unexploded ordnance, and IEDs since commencing operations in the district, along with 4,462,365 square meters of land.

'Masam' teams are continuing their survey and clearance operations for landmines, unexploded ordnance, and IEDs across several Yemeni governorates, addressing the persistent risks posed by war remnants to civilians in residential and agricultural areas.
