Cleric's Son, Guard Killed in Yemen Ambush Targeting Salafist Sheikh

A Salafist cleric, Sheikh Hussein Al-Salahi, survived an assassination attempt on Tuesday in northeastern Yemen, but the attack resulted in the deaths of his son and one of his escorts. The incident occurred on the Al-Abr-Al-Wadea-Marib route, according to tribal sources.

The sources reported that unidentified assailants set up an ambush for Sheikh Al-Salahi's convoy as it passed along the road. The attack led to the fatalities of his son and an escort identified as Ali Salim. The circumstances surrounding the incident and the identity of the perpetrators remain unclear.

The assassination attempt followed a public address by Sheikh Hussein Al-Salahi less than a day prior. During his speech at Matareh Al-Karama, he issued sharp criticism against the Brotherhood organization, accusing them of attempting to usurp tribal efforts and exploit the tribal mobilization for political gain. Sheikh Al-Salahi is also recognized as one of the first tribal leaders to respond to Sheikh Hamad bin Fedgham bin Rashid Al-Hazmi's call to participate in the tribal gathering at Matareh Al-Karama.

Within tribal circles, speculation has arisen linking the ambush to Sheikh Al-Salahi's stances supporting tribal mobilization. Some circulating accounts suggest the possibility of elements associated with the Brotherhood organization or Houthi militias being behind the attack. However, these conjectures are unconfirmed, and no group has claimed responsibility for the operation. Official investigation results identifying the perpetrators have not yet been released.
