Yemen: 31 Casualties from Firearms Misuse in Liberated Areas During June

Authorities in Yemen's liberated governorates reported 27 incidents involving firearms misuse and random firing in June, resulting in 7 fatalities and 24 injuries. Police reiterated warnings about the dangers of these practices and urged adherence to laws governing firearm possession and use.

An official police statistical report indicated that the deceased included one child and one woman, with the remaining victims aged between 18 and 35. Injuries varied from moderate to severe, predominantly affecting individuals between 20 and 40 years old, with several requiring hospitalization.

The statistics revealed that most fatalities occurred due to individuals mishandling their own firearms. Two individuals were killed by their siblings, and a third died from gunfire by someone outside their family. Fifteen incidents were attributed to victims accidentally discharging firearms, while four resulted from shots fired by friends, and two involved family members as perpetrators.

Police attributed the majority of these incidents to celebratory gunfire at weddings and social gatherings, negligent handling of weapons, and violations of regulations concerning the carrying and possession of firearms, coupled with a disregard for safety protocols.

Geographically, Al Dale' and Marib governorates recorded the highest number of incidents, with five each. Lahj, Hadramaut Coast, and Shabwah followed with three incidents apiece. Hajjah and Al Mahrah each reported two incidents, with the remaining incidents distributed across Taiz, Abyan, Hadramaut Valley and Desert, and Al Hudaydah governorates.

Security forces affirmed their commitment to ongoing measures aimed at curbing armed displays and reinforcing the enforcement of firearm regulations. They also highlighted efforts to enhance surveillance at city entrances, apprehend offenders, and prohibit celebratory gunfire at events to safeguard lives and property.

Citizens were urged to refrain from firing weapons during celebrations and to comply with legal directives for firearm possession and use, as these practices pose a direct threat to civilian lives and undermine public safety and security.
