Yemeni Antiquities Expert Warns of Rising Smuggling Amidst Third Gold Artifact Discovery

An expert on trafficked Yemeni antiquities has issued a stark warning regarding the escalating illicit trade of the nation's cultural heritage, highlighted by the emergence of a third distinct collection of gold artifacts within a single week.

Abdullah Mohsen, a researcher specializing in smuggled Yemeni antiquities, noted the recurrent appearance of rare Yemeni artifacts in markets and private collections outside the country. He described the recent discovery of a third gold assemblage in just seven days as a "worrying" indicator of increased smuggling activities targeting Yemen's historical treasures.

Mohsen elaborated that the latest collection includes gold adornments, such as a lion-shaped necklace and amuletic pieces shaped like a crescent moon and a bull's head. He pointed out that these items bear a strong resemblance to previously documented Yemeni artifacts that have been sold at international auctions or are held within private collections and museums abroad.

He emphasized that the discovered artifacts showcase the sophisticated artistry characteristic of ancient Yemeni civilizations. The lion necklace, for instance, was crafted using the cloisonné technique, a decorative method involving fine metal partitions filled with colored ornamental materials. The crescent and bull's head amulets are recognized as prominent symbols and talismans from ancient Yemen.

The researcher stressed that the repeated appearance of three separate gold artifact collections in such a short period necessitates an urgent official response. He called upon relevant authorities to initiate investigations and implement effective measures to safeguard Yemeni antiquities and curb their smuggling.

Mohsen underscored that the continued loss of these artifacts represents a significant detriment to Yemen's civilizational memory and historical legacy. He advocated for enhanced international cooperation to facilitate the recovery of looted antiquities and to pursue smuggling networks.
