A security source has revealed alarming intelligence regarding the establishment and operation of a Captagon production facility in the Naq'ah region of Saada Governorate, Yemen, under the direct supervision of an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commander identified as "Abu Baqir," who recently relocated from Syria to Yemen. The source indicated that the factory is situated in a remote area controlled by the Houthi militia and functions as part of an organized network for Captagon production and trafficking. This operation allegedly benefits from security facilitation and exploits the prevailing chaos and lack of oversight, transforming the governorate into a key hub for illicit activities that fund the militia. According to the source, the Iranian commander overseeing the facility possesses prior experience in managing similar operations outside Yemen. He is reportedly directing manufacturing and packaging processes, as well as training local operatives in production, storage, and concealment techniques to ensure the continuity of operations away from surveillance. The source further detailed that Captagon smuggling is conducted through organized trafficking networks, led by smugglers of Somali and African nationalities. Shipments are reportedly dispatched to various countries in the region, in addition to quantities being distributed within Yemen, posing significant security and social repercussions, particularly among the youth. The use of foreign smugglers is reportedly intended to minimize the network's local exposure and facilitate transit through coastal and land routes, leveraging existing smuggling channels previously used for arms and oil derivative trafficking. The revenue generated from Captagon trade is considered one of the illicit funding sources relied upon by the Houthi militia to support its military activities, especially as international pressure tightens on its traditional funding streams. This activity is seen as a dual threat to Yemeni and regional security. The source urged the international community and relevant anti-narcotics authorities to take immediate action to investigate this information, enhance monitoring of smuggling routes, and hold those involved in these networks accountable. The source warned that neglecting these activities could lead to the expansion of the drug trade and the transformation of Yemen into a new epicenter for its production and export. |
