A civilian was killed on Sunday by a landmine left behind by the Houthi terrorist militia in the Al-Durayhimi district, south of Hodeidah governorate on the Red Sea coast.

Human rights sources stated that the citizen Mahdi Ali Hanish died instantly when a landmine exploded while he was in the village of Al-Za'faran, within Al-Durayhimi district. This area has witnessed intense military confrontations in past years.

The sources added that the village continues to suffer from a widespread proliferation of mines and unexploded ordnance left by the Houthi militia, posing a constant threat to civilian lives, particularly farmers, shepherds, and children.

Hodeidah Governorate is considered one of the most mine-affected regions in Yemen, with vast areas of villages, agricultural lands, and rural roads transformed into dangerous zones that hinder the return of residents and their ability to resume normal life.

According to governmental, UN, and human rights organization reports, the Houthi militia has planted over two million mines in several Yemeni governorates since the outbreak of the war, resulting in thousands of casualties, both dead and injured, the majority of whom are civilians.

Mine clearance organizations indicate that Yemen faces one of the world's most severe landmine contamination crises, with casualties being recorded almost daily despite local and international efforts to clear affected areas.

Human rights reports confirm that Houthi mines have not been confined to military confrontation lines but have extended to villages, farms, water sources, and public roads, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis and impeding relief operations, movement, and the return of displaced persons to their areas.
