The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has issued a stark warning regarding the escalating measles outbreak in Yemen, with over 6,000 suspected cases reported among children in the first quarter of the year. This surge occurs amidst a severely degraded health system and an ongoing humanitarian crisis.

According to a recent OCHA report, the period from January to the end of March saw the notification of more than 6,000 suspected measles infections. Of these, approximately 2,500 were laboratory-confirmed, and at least 25 children succumbed to complications from the disease.

The report highlights that measles continues to pose a significant health threat to children, particularly in areas most affected by conflict. These regions are characterized by high rates of malnutrition and food insecurity, rendering children more vulnerable to infectious diseases.

OCHA attributes the widespread transmission to limited access to healthcare services and vaccination programs, compounded by vaccine hesitancy and the proliferation of misinformation. These factors have facilitated the spread of the disease, especially in remote areas and densely populated displacement camps.

The continuous economic deterioration and the increasing collapse of health infrastructure are impeding efforts to contain outbreaks, with essential medical services remaining disrupted across large parts of Yemen. The UN warns that insufficient funding for vaccination and health awareness campaigns could lead to a rise in preventable child deaths.

The organization has called for an urgent intensification of immunization campaigns and the strengthening of epidemiological surveillance systems. Areas under the control of Houthi militias have experienced a sustained decline in vaccination campaigns for years, with accusations of obstruction and the dissemination of anti-vaccine rhetoric contributing to lower immunization rates and the resurgence of vaccine-preventable diseases.
