Local sources in Yemen's central Ibb province reported on Friday that the practices of the Houthi militia have compelled numerous merchants and investors to emigrate from the governorate and other militia-controlled areas, seeking refuge primarily in Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and other foreign nations. This exodus is driven by escalating arbitrary taxation, oppression, harassment, and the outright confiscation of assets and property. Sheikh Jubran Basha, a member of the Ibb Provincial Council, strongly condemned the Houthi authorities' handling of traders and investors. He accused the group of failing to safeguard the rights of investors and expatriates, subsequently advising Yemenis abroad to refrain from returning or investing in the country at the present time. In a statement published on his Facebook page, Basha asserted that the current situation is reducing Yemeni expatriates from the status of "investor" to that of a "beggar seeking justice," citing what he termed the complete erosion of investors' rights within Yemen. Basha issued a stern warning to expatriates against returning or investing in Yemen currently, stating that anyone wishing to preserve "their mind before their money" and "their lifespan before their project" must postpone any plans for investment or even visiting the country "until further notice." He further elaborated that investors are confronted with protracted, unresolved legal cases in the courts, noting that a state that respects its investors—in his phrasing—is one that protects their capital and efforts, treating them as investors rather than as "spoils of war." Basha urged expatriates to direct their investments toward nations that "respect their time and effort" until the restoration of legitimate governance and the rule of law prevails, given the continuous and intensifying violations perpetrated by the militia against traders and investors in Ibb and other Houthi-controlled territories. |
