The Saudi Ministry of Defense announced that air defense systems successfully intercepted and destroyed a total of 16 Iranian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that were attempting to target the Shaybah oil field in the Rub' al Khali desert, confirming that the coordinated attacks were thwarted without any resulting casualties. Official spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense, Turki Al-Malki, detailed that air defenses managed to intercept two UAVs en route to the oil facility in the most recent thwarted aerial assault attempt. According to official data, this action followed the prior interception of four drones in the same operational area, in addition to ten other UAVs destroyed while proceeding toward the field, bringing the total number of downed aircraft to sixteen, with potential for further increases amid ongoing hostile activity. The Shaybah field, situated deep within the Rub' al Khali desert approximately 800 kilometers southeast of Dhahran, is recognized as one of the Kingdom’s largest oil reserves, boasting a production capacity nearing one million barrels of crude oil daily, and is operated by Saudi Aramco. These attempted strikes are part of a widening pattern of regional escalation, particularly following previous attacks targeting Saudi energy infrastructure, including the Ras Tanura refinery, which was the subject of an attempted strike by two UAVs. The Ministry of Defense confirmed that air defense systems successfully intercepted those two drones before they reached their intended target, resulting in no civilian injuries; however, falling debris caused a small, localized fire within the refinery premises, which was quickly contained by firefighting crews. Saudi authorities affirmed that air defense systems are maintaining an elevated state of readiness to effectively counter any threats directed at the Kingdom’s critical national assets. |
