Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen have decided to resume missile and drone attacks on ships transiting the Red Sea, according to two senior officials from the group, who spoke anonymously.

The two claimed that the rebels plans to restart attacks targeting commercial shipping routes in the Red Sea.

They said the campaign would involve missile and drone strikes against vessels operating along key shipping lanes. The group also intends to resume attacks on Israel, describing the move as part of its support for Iran.

One official indicated that the first strike under the renewed offensive could occur sooner than later.

The Red Sea corridor is a vital maritime route linking the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean through the Suez Canal and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

A significant share of global container traffic, oil shipments, and bulk cargo passes through this passage every year.

The Houthis had earlier halted attacks on Red Sea shipping as part of a deal with the US President Donald Trump. Under that arrangement, US military strikes against Houthi targets were also paused.

Additionally, the group suspended attacks against Israel following an October ceasefire that reduced hostilities in Gaza.

Renewed Houthi attacks could once again disrupt vessel traffic in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

During earlier phases of the conflict, several shipping lines diverted vessels around the Cape of Good Hope to avoid the threat zone.

That rerouting increased voyage distances by thousands of nautical miles, raising fuel costs, insurance premiums, and transit times.

Any escalation could:

•          Raise war risk insurance costs for ships in the region

•          Force container and tanker operators to change routes

•          Interrupt crude oil, LNG, and container cargo movements

•          Put more strain on global supply chains

Navies from multiple countries have previously deployed warships to safeguard commercial shipping in the area. A return to active missile and drone threats could lead to renewed multinational maritime security operations.
