Businessman Jalal Ahmed Qaed, known as "Jalal Al-Warafi," was fatally shot by a Houthi gunman on Thursday evening in the Al-Houban area, located east of Taiz Governorate in southwestern Yemen. Local sources reported that a Houthi militant identified as Mohammed Bashir Murai opened fire on Al-Warafi in an Al-Houban street, inflicting critical injuries. The victim was transported to a hospital but succumbed to his wounds before receiving treatment, while the perpetrator fled the scene immediately following the attack. According to these sources, the assassination appears to be the culmination of an ongoing dispute between Al-Warafi and an influential figure hailing from Saada province. This individual had reportedly made repeated attempts to seize control of the market owned by Al-Warafi, intending to transfer it to his own private investments. The sources further indicated that Sheikh Al-Warafi, who was also a leading figure in the General People's Congress party, had sought legal recourse. Judicial authorities had issued a ruling affirming his ownership of the market and its land against the Houthi influential figure. However, the militia allegedly resorted to physical liquidation after failing to seize the property through legal channels. This incident is situated within an escalating conflict over influence in the fruit and vegetable trade sector within the city, where Al-Warafi was recognized as a primary operator in the field. Commercial sources have noted increasing pressure exerted on businessmen and traders operating in areas controlled by the Houthi militia, including attempts to impose illicit levies or seize profitable commercial activities. The targeted killing has sparked renewed apprehension within the commercial sector in Al-Houban, accompanied by warnings regarding the potential negative repercussions of such incidents on economic activity and market operations across the city. |
