Tomorrow marks the fifteenth anniversary of the events widely known in the Yemeni popular consciousness as "The Catastrophe," which began on February 11, 2011, representing the most perilous inflection point in modern Yemeni history. These protests transcended mere political demands, instead creating a strategic vulnerability exploited by forces of chaos and sectarian agendas, plunging the nation into an unending vortex of war, fragmentation, and displacement.

The realities of the past decade have demonstrated that "February 11" served as the conduit through which the Houthi militia advanced from their strongholds in Marran, Saada, into the heart of the capital, Sana’a. Through tacit coordination and alliances with the parties of the "National Consensus Forum" at the time, the sectarian group leveraged the political turmoil to present itself as an integral part of the revolutionary movement, while secretly preparing its armed seizure of state institutions and the republican system.

Examining the period preceding the eruption reveals the foresight of the late leader Ali Abdullah Saleh, who had long warned that tampering with constitutional legitimacy and reneging on consensus would inevitably lead the "nation and the people" toward utter ruin. Despite his earnest calls for inclusive dialogue and concessions to preserve life, the dissenting factions insisted on pursuing their agenda of chaos, thereby opening the door to regional and sectarian grievances that ultimately tore apart the unified national fabric.

The public squares in 2011 became the stage for a significant deception, where the rhetoric of the Islah Party merged with Houthi demands under the banner of "grievance," with both sides sharing resources in a surreal display. Once the dust settled, it became evident that this alliance was merely a mechanism to empower the militias, which quickly revealed their true nature by turning against their former "square" partners and commencing the systematic destruction of Yemeni identity.

The ensuing political chaos was compounded by bloody crimes targeting the state structure and its symbols, most notably the terrorist bombing of the Presidential Mosque. These assaults, aimed at state leaders and proponents of constitutional legitimacy, were designed to paralyze the regime's capacity for resistance, setting off a chain of disasters beginning February 11, 2011, culminating in the "mother of all catastrophes" on September 21, 2014.

Today, fifteen years later, Yemenis contrast a former state that respected the boundaries of freedom and guaranteed expression with the current Houthi tyranny that has transformed the country into a vast prison. While the republican system readily absorbed opposition and demonstrations, Sana’a now suffers under repression and violations, with human rights reports indicating the arbitrary detention of over half a million Yemeni citizens since the coup.

As the architects of "The Catastrophe" continue to celebrate its anniversary from exile, millions inside the country endure the harsh realities of hunger and intimidation. This persistence in glorifying the events that initiated the nation's downfall reflects a profound disconnect from the populace, who view February 11 as the beginning of the collapse that eradicated the army, security, and basic livelihood stability.

Observers and politicians concur that exiting this crisis necessitates an explicit acknowledgment of this historical transgression and the initiation of a sacred national endeavor under unified leadership that supersedes past conflicts. Analysts emphasize that the Presidential Leadership Council and all republican forces must embrace their historical responsibility to liberate Sana’a and reclaim the hijacked state, asserting that the sole path to ending "The Catastrophe" is the eradication of the imamate currently suffocating the Yemeni people and the restoration of republican authority.
