Most markets in the Internationally Recognized Government (IRG) controlled areas exhibit moderate to high functionality, especially regarding availability, assortments, supply chain resilience, access and protection and food quality dimensions, according to World Food Program recent assessment.

While supply chains demonstrate strong resilience, susceptibility to supply route disruptions persists, particularly in localized parts of Marib, Taiz, Lahj and Abyan.

WFP assessment noticed that prices and service quality remain the weakest dimensions across several governorates, and cash-based interventions are largely feasible across most districts.

While these findings indicate that market-based interventions such as cash-based transfers are feasible across most districts, risks around price volatility, limited competition in some areas, poor service quality and weak infrastructure remain.

Based on its findings, WFP assessment recommended that Cash-Based Transfers (CBT) scale-up is feasible across most districts in governorates of Aden, Lahj, Al Dhale’e and Shabwah, but with guardrails, given that Yemen’s market systems remain highly susceptible to economic and geo-political shocks.
