Security forces in Yemen's southeastern Shabwah Governorate announced the arrest of an individual suspected of involvement in the use and trafficking of illicit narcotics within the provincial capital, Ataq. According to a statement issued by the police, the suspect, identified by initials (A.N.M.S.) and aged 32, was apprehended following a security tip-off. Authorities reportedly discovered approximately 100 Captagon pills, 16 grams of hashish, and two liters of locally distilled alcohol in his possession at the time of the arrest. Initial investigations suggest the suspect is implicated in both the consumption and distribution of controlled substances. Security officials confirmed that the accused has been detained pending further legal processing, and the seized contraband has been cataloged as evidence before the case is referred to the competent judicial authorities. Yemeni authorities have frequently noted a significant escalation in the smuggling and circulation of narcotics in recent years. This surge is often attributed to the deteriorating security and economic conditions resulting from the protracted conflict spanning over a decade, which has inadvertently converted certain regions into corridors for drug trafficking or local distribution hubs. Despite these operational challenges, security agencies are reportedly conducting sporadic anti-narcotics campaigns, though they continue to face difficulties related to the vast geographical area and limited logistical capabilities. |
