Houthi forces reportedly abducted lawyer Abdulkarim Wardan Al-Jarour, the media and culture official for the Yemeni Lawyers Syndicate in Dhamar and Al-Bayda governorates, on Saturday. He was taken to the security administration prison in Dhamar governorate.

Human rights sources indicated that Al-Jarour's detention stems from his human rights activities and his coverage of violations against prisoners at the Dhamar reformatory. He had reportedly called for an urgent investigation into the conditions of detainees, including an incident that nearly resulted in a prisoner's death, and alleged negligence at the emergency department of Dhamar General Hospital.

The detained lawyer had been pursuing cases related to the living and health conditions of prisoners, advocating for their demands for food and medical care, and documenting abuses against lawyers in areas controlled by Houthi militias, according to sources.

In response, the Yemeni Lawyers Syndicate issued a directive, number (20), dated August 22, 2026. It assigned lawyers Akram Saleh Ahmed Dar'an and Akram Mohammed Hussein Al-Radmani to follow up on the case of Abdulkarim Wardan Al-Jarour's detention at the Dhamar governorate security administration, ascertain the reasons for his arrest, and work towards his swift release.

Al-Jarour's abduction occurs amid escalating restrictions and violations against lawyers and human rights activists in Houthi-controlled territories. Concerns are mounting that arbitrary detention is being used to suppress the documentation of abuses and the exposure of detainee conditions.
