The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has issued a stark warning regarding the escalating humanitarian crisis in Yemen, citing recent military escalations by Houthi forces. The organization stressed that ongoing tensions and military operations risk undermining the fragile stability and exacerbating the suffering of millions of Yemenis. According to a recent report by UNFPA, the recent military escalation, which includes the Houthi militia's declaration of a navigation ban on Saudi Arabia and attacks on oil facilities, alongside intensified clashes on various fronts, occurs at a time when Yemen is already grappling with severe food insecurity, a deteriorating healthcare system, and inadequate protection services. Compounding these challenges is a significant decline in international funding allocated for humanitarian response. UNFPA reiterated that Yemen continues to face one of the world's most severe humanitarian crises, with over 22 million individuals, approximately half of the population, requiring urgent humanitarian assistance and protection services. The report specifically highlighted that women and girls bear a disproportionate burden of the crisis, with over 10.95 million women and girls across the country in need of immediate support. Regarding funding, the UNFPA revealed a critical shortfall in financing its operations in Yemen for 2026. The organization has only secured 18% of the total required funding, amounting to $71.9 million, despite seven months of the year having already passed. The UNFPA cautioned that the persistent funding gap, coupled with ongoing military escalation, could severely jeopardize the capacity of humanitarian organizations to continue providing essential services. This situation risks further increasing the vulnerability of the most at-risk populations throughout Yemen. |
