Aden Residents Demand Urgent Action on Worsening Sanitation Crisis

Residents in Yemen's temporary capital, Aden, are facing escalating hardship due to the collapse of basic services, with experts warning of severe health consequences stemming from deteriorating infrastructure, particularly in the sanitation sector.

Residents of Al-Nasr Al-Qadim and Al-Nasr Al-Jadeed neighborhoods in the Khormaksar district have issued an urgent appeal to local authorities, demanding immediate intervention to address the long-standing decline in services. They highlighted the cessation of a sanitation project in Al-Nasr Al-Qadim and the absence of an integrated network in Al-Nasr Al-Jadeed, leading to the discharge of polluted water in residential areas and exacerbating environmental conditions. The residents also reported a near-total lack of water service and a dilapidated electricity network, prone to frequent breakdowns due to a lack of regular maintenance, which damages household appliances.

These complaints are part of a broader crisis affecting several districts in Aden, where recurrent failures in sanitation networks have caused sewage to overflow into the streets, forming stagnant pools contaminated with waste, including plastic bags. Residents in Al-Mansoura, Crater, Al-Mualla, and Al-Buraiqa districts told "Khaba" news agency that these stagnant pools have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and insects, raising concerns about the spread of diseases, especially among children, amid rising summer temperatures.

Local residents have called on the Aden local authority and relevant government bodies to intervene swiftly to alleviate their suffering, holding them responsible for the deteriorating service conditions and the ensuing health crisis. Medical sources speaking to "Khaba" warned of the risks of disease outbreaks associated with water pollution and insect proliferation, given the continued accumulation of waste and the slow response to address the crisis.

Human rights advocates pointed out that these risks underscore the profound challenges Aden faces in rehabilitating its infrastructure, amid growing calls for urgent action to curb the deterioration and protect residents from an escalating health and environmental crisis.
