The Yemeni Teachers Union has urgently called upon the political leadership and the government to swiftly address the protracted issue of delayed salary payments for educators, particularly for displaced teachers, demanding an end to their escalating suffering caused by irregular remuneration. These demands were formalized in appeals addressed to Dr. Rashad al-Alimi, the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, Prime Minister Dr. Maeen Saeed Al-Saud, and Minister of Education Dr. Adel Abdulmajeed Al-Abadi. The Union emphasized that teachers and personnel within the education sector face severe living conditions due to the failure to ensure salaries are disbursed consistently at the end of every month. In the appeals signed by the Secretary-General and Acting Head of the Teachers Union, Hussein Nasser Al-Khawlani, the organization highlighted that displaced teachers have not received their salaries for thirteen months, and some have been deprived of pay since the moment they were displaced, significantly worsening their hardship amid the nation's difficult economic circumstances. Furthermore, the Union noted that the plight of teachers in Houthi-controlled areas is more severe, as they have not received salaries for over nine years. The continuous delay in payments constitutes a violation of the Constitution and law, negatively impacting the educational process and the future of the coming generations. The Union urged the political leadership and the government to guarantee the regular disbursement of teacher salaries by the close of each Gregorian month without delay. It also called for applying pressure on the international community and the United Nations to compel the Houthis to disburse the salaries of all education sector employees in their controlled areas, in accordance with international law. Additional demands included raising teacher salaries commensurate with the high cost of living and halting the depreciation of the national currency. The Union also requested the payment of annual increments for displaced teachers and employees covering the period from 2014 to 2024, in addition to settling the status of teachers and educators whose files have been pending since 2013. The Union stressed the necessity for the government to issue directives for the payment of displaced teachers' salaries without preconditions imposed by the Civil Service Ministry, acknowledging their displacement status. It also demanded the finalization of disbursement procedures for those who have completed the paperwork but whose payments remain halted at the Ministry of Finance in Aden for undisclosed reasons, alongside the disbursement of the 30 percent allowance denied to displaced teachers and employees since its approval in late 2018. The organization expressed hope for an immediate response from the political leadership and the government to alleviate the suffering of educators and ensure the regularity of salary payments, which is crucial for stabilizing the educational process and serving future generations. |
