Health officials in Yemen's southwestern governorate of Taiz reported 14,349 confirmed cases of malaria during 2025, accompanied by tens of thousands of suspected cases, signaling a significant expansion of the disease's prevalence across the region.

Malaria remains a paramount public health challenge in Yemen. Previous studies and estimates indicate that approximately 60% of the population resides in areas vulnerable to infection, with annual infection rates ranging between two and three million people, carrying an estimated mortality rate of about 1% of total cases.

Personnel within the health sector noted that the protracted conflict, now exceeding a decade, has severely degraded the capabilities of the national health system. This decline has directly impacted the operations of the National Malaria Control Program, which, according to former officials, had previously achieved substantial progress in reducing infection rates in several endemic areas prior to the war.

The conflict, coupled with concurrent economic deterioration and the collapse of essential health infrastructure, has negatively affected control efforts. This environment is characterized by reduced funding and shortages of necessary medicines and diagnostic supplies, particularly impacting remote and rural areas.

Health workers emphasize that many patients, especially women and children in distant locales, face considerable obstacles in accessing necessary testing and treatment due to escalating medical service costs and a scarcity of essential supplies.

Health officials are urgently calling for enhanced support for the National Malaria Control Program and intensified preventative and therapeutic interventions, warning that the continuation of current funding shortfalls could precipitate further widespread transmission in upcoming seasons.
