Yemen Mine Clearance Project Removes 819 Explosives in One Week

The Saudi-funded Masam project has successfully cleared 819 mines and unexploded ordnance in Yemen during the fourth week of August, as part of ongoing demining operations across several Yemeni governorates.

The project, affiliated with the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre, announced in a statement that the cleared items included 23 anti-personnel mines, 29 anti-tank mines, 764 unexploded ordnance items, and three improvised explosive devices. The statement attributed the planting of these explosives to the Iran-backed Houthi militia.

According to the announcement, the total number of mines, explosive remnants, and booby traps cleared by Masam teams since the beginning of August has reached 10,099. Since the commencement of its operations in Yemen, the project has cleared a cumulative total of 588,325 explosive devices.

These clearance operations are part of the project's broader objective to rid contaminated areas of war remnants, thereby reopening roads and residential areas for the local population. The initiative aims to mitigate the persistent danger posed by mines and unexploded ordnance to civilians.

Masam continues its survey and clearance activities in affected regions, with a particular emphasis on protecting vulnerable groups, including children, women, and the elderly, amidst the continued presence of war remnants in numerous areas throughout Yemen.
