Intelligence reports indicate significant Houthi military reinforcements have been deployed towards the governorate of Taiz, the city of Mocha, and the western coast, intensifying fears of an escalation in military operations targeting areas near the Bab al-Mandab strait.

According to the "Sheba Intelligence" network, the scale of these recent reinforcements surpasses previous movements towards the western front. The deployment includes personnel and military equipment directed towards axes connected to Taiz and Mocha. These developments suggest a Houthi intent to approach the positions of government forces stationed at the entrances to Bab al-Mandab.

While Sheba Intelligence could not independently verify the commencement of a Houthi ground offensive towards Bab al-Mandab, it noted that the size and direction of the movements make the western coast a critical front requiring close observation amidst the current escalation.

These troop movements follow nearly two weeks of intense Houthi attacks on the city of Mocha and its port, which began on August 9 with coordinated missile and drone strikes. The Yemeni army reported that these attacks resulted in seven deaths and thirty injuries, while government air defenses announced the interception of eleven drones. Commercial and maritime operations at the port were subsequently suspended due to the attacks, with official estimates indicating significant financial losses. This escalation also coincided with attacks impacting maritime navigation in the vicinity of Bab al-Mandab.

Current intelligence suggests the Houthi build-up is part of a pattern of preparations that began in July, when Sheba Intelligence identified indicators pointing to the Taiz-Bab al-Mandab axis as a priority front for any broad military escalation, alongside the Marib-Jawf and Saudi Yemeni border fronts. Previous reports also mentioned Houthi preparations for a naval maneuver on the western coast, simulating the closure of the Bab al-Mandab strait, concurrent with the transfer of missiles and drones to coastal sites south of Hodeidah.

Assessments suggest that swiftly controlling Bab al-Mandab would be a complex operation, requiring the penetration of multiple defense lines and the securing of exposed supply routes towards the coast. Consequently, weakening government forces around Mocha, disrupting the port, and exhausting defensive capabilities are considered potential objectives for the initial phase of any escalation. Mocha holds strategic importance, situated between internal Taiz fronts and the southern gateway to the Red Sea, with its port serving as a vital component of the supply lines and logistical services for government forces deployed along the western coast.

Although there are no confirmed indicators to date of the Houthis establishing effective control over Bab al-Mandab or launching a direct ground assault for its capture, the convergence of ground mobilization with missile and drone attacks and maritime escalation heightens concerns about the militia's attempt to create a multi-layered pressure zone around Mocha and the strait's entrances, potentially paving the way for future military actions towards Bab al-Mandab.
