A Yemeni rights group has documented 1,332 cases of torture against detainees in Yemeni prisons over the past decade of conflict, with 88 individuals dying as a result, the majority in Houthi-controlled facilities. The Association of Mothers of Abductees announced these figures during a hearing for survivors of detention held in Taiz on Thursday, coinciding with the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. The event was part of a campaign titled "No to Torture... Justice is a Right for Victims," aimed at highlighting the reality of torture and violations against abductees, forcibly disappeared persons, and detainees, and to bolster efforts toward accountability and justice. The session featured direct testimonies from survivors detailing various forms of abuse within detention centers. These included physical torture, medical neglect, mistreatment, deprivation of basic rights, and harsh, inhumane detention conditions. The Association of Mothers of Abductees emphasized that the testimonies presented reflect a recurring pattern of documented violations. The group stressed that documenting these practices is a crucial step toward achieving transitional justice and ensuring the perpetrators are held accountable. The association urged relevant authorities to take serious action to halt these violations, strengthen accountability mechanisms, and guarantee that impunity is not granted. The group affirmed its continued commitment to documenting abuses and amplifying the voices of victims despite the challenges. |
