Yemeni lawyer and legal consultant Abdulmajeed Sabra began an open-ended hunger strike on Tuesday, June 16, 2026, protesting his continued detention by the Houthi militia without formal charges or referral to the judiciary.

Human rights sources stated that Sabra is currently held in a prison belonging to the Security and Intelligence Service in the Al-Sarf area, north of Sana'a. He had been moved between several detention facilities under the same agency in recent times.

The sources added that the Houthis abducted lawyer Sabra on September 25 of the previous year after storming his office in the Al-Shumaylah district of Sana'a. Inside prison, he was reportedly presented with conditions for his release, including abandoning his work in human rights, refraining from political posts on social media, and ceasing to defend detainees.

Despite Sabra's agreement to these conditions, the militia has continued to delay his release and has refused to disclose the reasons for his ongoing detention or to refer his case to a judicial authority.

Abdulmajeed Sabra is recognized as a prominent lawyer advocating for detainees held in Houthi prisons in Sana'a, including several journalists who were abducted in recent years. His hunger strike, coupled with the lack of legal guarantees for his rights, has raised growing human rights concerns regarding his safety.
