A Yemeni academic has ignited widespread controversy after highlighting the stark disparity in living standards by detailing a government official's substantial expenditure on Eid holiday purchases while citizens and public employees face severe economic hardship.

Dr. Rasin Al-Rasin, an academic at Sana'a University, stated in a widely circulated Facebook post that he had to purchase Eid necessities worth 50,000 Yemeni Riyals on an installment plan due to financial constraints. He subsequently encountered an official shopping in a retail store within the Houthi-controlled capital, Sana'a.

The academic reported his astonishment upon observing the official settle a bill amounting to approximately 800,000 Yemeni Riyals for Eid gifts ("Ja'alat Al-Eid") at a single establishment. Dr. Al-Rasin noted that this figure excluded other planned purchases, such as raisins and almonds, which were intended to be acquired from different vendors.

Among the items purchased were chocolate boxes, each reportedly priced near 50,000 Riyals and containing fewer than thirty pieces, several of which the official's children acquired. The post, which garnered significant attention online, underscores the pronounced gulf in living conditions across Yemen.

This situation reflects the increasing economic difficulties faced by many residents due to escalating prices and diminished purchasing power amid the ongoing crisis, compounded by the Houthi militia's nine-year refusal to disburse salaries to government employees.
