Yemeni Navy Busts Iran-Linked Smuggling Cell, Exposes Red Sea Drone Boat Plot

The Yemeni Navy has apprehended a smuggling cell with ties to Iran, uncovering a new route for the transfer and development of equipment used in outfitting explosive-laden boats that threaten maritime navigation in the Red Sea.

The military media wing of the National Resistance reported on Tuesday that recorded confessions from two cell members, Abdullah Qumairi and Walid Salil, detailed smuggling operations and the management of arms and naval equipment shipments coordinated directly with officers from Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps.

According to excerpts of the confessions released by military media, the apprehended individuals admitted to participating in the management of an arms shipment intercepted by naval forces in the Red Sea. They stated the shipment included advanced technical equipment and devices intended for equipping suicide boats and enhancing their operational capabilities.

The confessions also revealed past operations where the cell allegedly misled American forces regarding a shipment before its members were detained. They were later released as part of a prisoner exchange.

The intelligence gathered suggests the cell's activities extended beyond the Red Sea, encompassing smuggling routes through borders towards Somalia and Djibouti, as part of a network used for transporting equipment and weapons associated with maritime operations.

These developments emerge amid growing concerns that explosive-laden and unmanned boats could become an additional means of threatening commercial shipping traffic in the Red Sea, a vital global trade artery.
