Thousands of families in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen are enduring severe economic hardship as the Eid al-Adha festival approaches, with a critical lack of purchasing power, suspended salaries, and absent job opportunities transforming the holiday into a heavy burden for citizens.

Markets in many Houthi-controlled regions are experiencing unusually weak sales activity during what is typically a peak season. Numerous citizens find themselves unable to afford even the most basic necessities, including food and clothing, amidst escalating poverty and hunger rates.

Residents report that the economic situation has deteriorated to an unprecedented level, with limited incomes insufficient to cover essential needs due to continuous price hikes for food, clothing, and consumer goods. Local sources indicate that the majority of families are now reliant on debt or humanitarian aid for sustenance, while the ability to purchase non-essentials or holiday items has significantly diminished. Many families have been compelled to reduce daily meal portions or forgo purchasing new clothes for their children for Eid.

For years, thousands of employees in Houthi-controlled territories have faced suspended or irregular salary payments, leading to the erosion of the middle class and the widening of poverty. The ongoing conflict and economic contraction have also crippled numerous commercial activities and small businesses, resulting in increased unemployment, particularly among youth and daily wage laborers who have largely lost their income sources.

Economists emphasize that the continued financial and administrative division in Yemen has exacerbated the living crisis, with a devalued currency and rising import and transport costs directly impacting the prices of essential commodities. Despite markets being stocked with goods and clothing before Eid, commercial activity is notably sluggish compared to previous years, with many citizens merely browsing without the means to purchase.

Traders report a significant decline in sales this year due to low consumer liquidity, noting that most families are prioritizing only essential purchases, leading to a marked decrease in sales of clothing, footwear, and other Eid-related items. Humanitarian organizations are warning of a worsening humanitarian crisis, with millions facing food insecurity and malnutrition in one of the world's most severe crises. Observers suggest that the continuation of the war and the failure to achieve political and economic solutions threaten further economic decline, while citizens struggle with daily life amid a lack of salaries, job opportunities, or effective social safety nets.

As Eid nears, the primary hope for many Yemeni families is securing food and basic necessities for their children, as the traditional expressions of joy and celebration have become an unattainable luxury under the current circumstances.
