At least 139 people have died following the capsizing of a migrant boat off the coast of Djibouti, with authorities recovering an additional 30 bodies and 84 individuals still missing, according to the latest figures from the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The vessel, reportedly carrying approximately 305 migrants, departed from Djibouti en route to Yemen before overturning at sea near the northern Djibouti region of Godoria. This incident marks one of the deadliest maritime disasters on the migration route across the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing to locate the missing persons and recover the bodies of the deceased. Eighty-two survivors have been transported to the Migrant Response Centre in the city of Obock, where they are receiving necessary medical care and humanitarian assistance.

IOM Director General Amy Pope urged the international community and donor nations to intensify efforts in establishing safe and regular migration pathways. She emphasized the critical need to reduce dangerous sea journeys that compel migrants to face the risks of drowning and death in their attempts to reach their destinations.
