The 36th anniversary of Yemeni unity is being observed, highlighting a pivotal moment in modern Yemeni history. This national project, which culminated decades of struggle, established a unified Yemeni state and ended a period of division.

The occasion arrives amidst a complex phase for Yemen, stemming from the Houthi coup, which has led to the collapse of state institutions, economic and social fragmentation, and escalating threats to national identity. Consequently, May 22nd transcends mere symbolic celebration, serving as a reminder of the unifying national project as a cornerstone for salvation and state restoration.

The establishment of the unified state represented a radical transformation in Yemen's political system, ushering in political pluralism, multi-party democracy, freedom of the press, and parliamentary activity. This period was considered a leading emerging democratic experiment in the Arab and Arabian Peninsula regions.

Following unification, Yemen experienced significant developmental and political changes across its governorates, particularly in the southern and eastern regions, with expansions in infrastructure, public services, and economic development. Strategic road networks were built, ports and airports were modernized, higher education expanded with new universities and technical institutes, and sectors like oil, gas, and telecommunications were developed. Yemen's foreign policy also achieved key milestones, including the 2000 border demarcation agreement with Saudi Arabia, which enhanced regional stability and fostered an environment conducive to investment and economic cooperation.

Despite the achievements of unity and the national role of the late President Ali Abdullah Saleh, certain political factions created divisions that led to administrative and economic imbalances, especially concerning issues in the southern governorates after the 1994 civil war. These issues remained a focus of political discourse and the practical efforts of President Saleh and the General People's Congress, who consistently emphasized addressing these imbalances within the framework of preserving the unified Yemeni state, rejecting divisive agendas.

The Houthi militia's 2014 coup represents the most significant threat to modern Yemen since unification. Their seizure of Sana'a and state institutions plunged the country into conflict, economic collapse, and social turmoil. The militia sought to impose a sectarian project, abolish political pluralism, undermine republican institutions, and reinstate imamate-style rule, exacerbating internal divisions and tearing the social fabric.

The current phase demands that Yemeni national forces overcome minor differences and consolidate efforts towards the central goal of restoring state institutions, ending the Houthi coup, and building lasting peace based on national partnership and the rule of law. Preserving Yemeni unity is seen as compatible with addressing grievances and provides the framework for any future national project aimed at achieving justice, stability, and balanced development. This process necessitates rebuilding the military and security apparatus on national foundations, strengthening judicial and administrative institutions, and launching a comprehensive national reconciliation initiative.

Regional and international developments underscore that Yemen's stability and unity are strategic interests for Arab national security and international maritime navigation, given Yemen's crucial geographic location. Any attempts at fragmentation or partition would empower armed groups and regional agendas, making the preservation of a unified Yemen integral to safeguarding regional and international stability. On May 22nd, calls are renewed to revive the spirit of the national project that united Yemenis under the banner of the republic, unity, and a civil state, recognizing this as the most viable path to rescue Yemen from war and division and rebuild a modern state capable of protecting its citizens, preserving its sovereignty, and fulfilling its people's aspirations for security, stability, and development.
